Oz Clarke Pocket Wine A-Z

Oz Clarke is one of the most well-known and respected wine experts in the world. He has written several award winning books, won numerous awards and recently been appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). However, I became a fan of his through an entertaining series he made with Top Gear buffoon James May: Oz and James's Big Wine Adventure. Series 1 followed the two on their road trip in a Jaguar XJ-S convertible through France and the second series was set in California, where there vehicle of choice was a motor-home. Oz Clarke's informal and no-bullshit approach to wine is infectious and refreshing in a sphere which can sometimes be pretentious and snobbish.

Oz Clarke's annual 'pocket wine A-Z' is a book written in his own style with lots of useful information but presented in a very easy to digest format. It works very well as a quick reference guide as well as to read and improve your general wine knowledge.

I particularly like his best producers section for each region. Especially when you want to try a region for the first time, it gives you some instant recommendations of the best and most consistent producers for each varietal within that region.
