Bordeaux

Bordeaux is naturally divided by the Gironde estuary into right and left bank. Bordeaux is unsurprisingly one of the most traditional and tightly regulated wine regions in the world. The grape varieties allowed to be grown in Bordeaux are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit verdot. As a rough guide, the wines of the left bank of Bordeaux are Cabernet sauvignon dominated and the wines of the right bank are Merlot dominated. Saint-Émilion is a wine region or AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) whose wines are predominantly composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc with relatively small contributions from Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is from the Saint Émillion region and is Merlot dominated (80%). It has a lovely bouquet of dark fruits and tobacco. The wine is medium bodied and quite dry overall. Main flavours are of raspberry, plum, and some tobacco. Being a merlot dominated wine it has a soft texture with subtle tannins and no hard edges. This wine is approachable at the moment and will probably improve for the next 2-3 years and remain in its drinking window for the next 10 years. It is not overly complex but a good example of a Saint Émillion.
