Surani Costarossa 2015 Primitivo di Manduria

Primitivo

Primitivo, also known as Zinfandel, is a red wine grape, originating in Croatia, that is now grown predominantly in Italy and California. A varietal that is known for its bold and fruit-forward style. The city of Manduria, in Puglia, located in the 'heel of Italy' is renowned for producing high quality primitivo wines.

This wine, which I picked up from Majestic in a mix six deal for under £10, is from that very region. Primitivo wines are definitely some of my favourite wines, however, they normally start at £15 plus, with the better known producers costing between £20 and £30. So I was interested to see if quality could be found on a budget. I am happy to report that, although not as complex as some of the better examples, this wine is still very much true to the style. It is full bodied, fruit forward and immediately approachable. It has plenty of black cherry, raspberry and dark fruit flavours with a touch of jamminess and sweetness at the end. It is a big wine, that can stand up to strong flavours. Well worth a try, especially in a mix six deal.
