McGuigan Handmade - Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2013
Shiraz
South Australia and the Shiraz grape go hand in hand, it has flourished there from the sun-drenched valleys of Barossa and McLaren vale to the cooler climates of Adelaide Hills. The wine today is from Langhorne Creek. A premium wine growing region, and one of five to make up the Fleurieu Peninsula, located to the south of Adelaide in South Australia. Langhorne Creek is most well known for its fruit forward Cabernet Sauvignon. Alongside its Cabernet Sauvignon it also produces full bodied Shiraz and Malbec and has some of the oldest vines in the world.
Langhorne Creek is considerably cooler than the more well known areas of Barossa valley and McLaren vale (to the North of Adelaide). This is due to the effect of what the locals call the ‘Lake Doctor’. Not a lake per say, this name is given to the southerly winds blowing directly from the Antarctic and Southern Ocean over Lake Alexandria.
Established in 1992, McGuigan wine has very quickly become Australia’s 4th biggest winemaker. It has multiple wineries across Australia with a focus in Hunter Valley in New South Wales near Sydney. However, today’s wine, as previously mentioned, is from Langhorne creek, an area of fertile soils and temperate climate.
McGuigan’s handmade shiraz is a premium, limited edition wine from their portfolio that aims to showcase the outstanding terroir of Langhorne Creek. In the glass the wine is a deep, dark red/violet colour. The nose has aromas of vanilla, nuts and berries. The palate is rich and full-bodied with concentrated flavours of blackberries and plums. Despite its relatively big structure, it has been made to be approachable young with soft tannins and a lengthy finish.
